How Strengthening Families started

From 1998 to 2011 more than 37,500 children and young people have been involved in the Strengthening Families programme.

Brief history

A trial of what was to become Strengthening Families started in Waitakere in 1996. Since 1999 Strengthening Families has been available across New Zealand.

In 2004 a review of Strengthening Families led to changes to make it more effective and consistent across the country.

In 2006, 11 government agencies reconfirmed their support for Strengthening Families when they all signed a Strategic Framework. The Chief Executives stated:

"We public service Chief Executives are committed to our respective agencies’ on-going involvement and active participation in the Strengthening Families initiative and to supporting its contribution to achieving the goals of Families – Young and Old."
